The smell of pine, the rough feel of a fallen log, the hollow echo of a hand against a tree stump—these sensations carry with them a special kind of comfort. Wood, and the art of woodwork, has found its way through history into our homes, our parks and even our offices. Even a small bit of nature found in a wooden cup coaster can make any space feel more homey. No one knows this better than the World Wood Day Foundation. And as March 21st, or World Wood Day, is coming round the corner, Long Beach is gearing up for the Fifth Annual World Wood Day Celebration!
Discover More About Long Beach’s World Wood Day Celebration
The five-day long World Wood Day Celebration event offers a cultural exchange of wood practices, histories and creations between wood enthusiasts of different backgrounds, as well as a special cultural experience to the general public. This family-friendly event has something for everyone, whether you’re a wood connoisseur, admirer or novice. This year’s theme is Roots. After all, many cultures and identities have roots in woodworking, and every human being is rooted in an interrelationship with trees. Even in the modern era, we can embrace sustainable practices and admire the beautiful art created by this eco-friendly and renewable biomaterial.
From Tuesday, March 21st to Sunday the 26th, the Long Beach Convention & Entertainment Center will be teeming with daily programming that runs from 9:00 AM until 6:00 PM. There are many exciting and unique attractions to see. Take, for example, the Temple Bus. Known for his large-scale temple creations displayed at Burning Man, as well as the art cars and buses he’s crafted from recyclable materials, woodworker David Best plans to create a temple bus for the World Wood Day Celebration. Visitors are invited to not only view the bus, but also venture inside and take a seat!
Another notable program is the Children’s Event. Designed to truly engage children, this four-part activity provides a truly immersive, educational opportunity. Firstly, there will be hands-on experiences that explore wood through the senses of smell, touch and hearing. Second, woodworking demonstrations will enhance your child’s understanding. Next, the kids will see musical performances that draw them deeper into the world of wood. And finally, the children will be able to channel their new knowledge into creations through a drawing contest.
The selection of programs and events is sure to inspire and involve each and every individual. Come by yourself or bring the whole family! Find some time in your week to discover your Roots.
The World Wood Day Celebration will be held in Hall C of the Seaside Ballroom and Seaside Meeting Rooms in Long Beach Convention & Entertainment Center, which is located at 300 East Ocean Boulevard, Long Beach, California 90802.
