Panoramic View of Malibu Beach Front
To get to Malibu from LA, drive the Santa Monica Freeway (Interstate 10) west. Take the road towards the beach. At the western end of I-10, there is a tunnel. Leaving the tunnel, you are on The Pacific Coast Highway, affectionately called PCH by residents and US 1 by others. Calling PCH US 1 is a dead giveaway that you are not a resident of Malibu.
Malibu is a 27-mile stretch of gorgeous land bounded on the west by the Pacific Ocean and on the east by the Santa Monica Mountains. Surprisingly, Malibu with its celebrities and movie stars is a close-knit community, which maintains a carefully preserved rural flavor. The town covers about 45,000 acres and varies in width from one to eight miles.
Malibu Nightlife
Nightlife in Malibu has fewer spots than Los Angeles and they close earlier, but otherwise rival LA in variety and quality. The oceanfront makes a wonderful backdrop for drinks and music. A favorite among residents is the Blue Lounge at Moonshadows restaurant. The Blue Lounge has a terrific bar with a deck overhanging the beach. A DJ plays every night of the week.
One interesting aspect of the community is that Larry Ellison, billionaire owner of Oracle refurbished the Casa Malibu Inn, his friend, David Geffen is also a billionaire, and he refurbished the Malibu Beach Inn. Both properties reopened as luxury hotels. Is it possible that Malibu is undergoing gentrification? Unlikely when it is billionaires refurbishing properties formerly owned by multi-millionaires. While these hotels and restaurants underwent refurbishing there were no shortage of great places to eat.
Great Malibu restaurants include:
Geoffrey’s
A steak and seafood classic, sitting on a bluff overlooking the ocean.
Tra Di Noi
Romantic ambience and great Italian food
Taverna Tony
Wonderful authentic Greek food served with a backdrop of equally authentic belly dancers.
The Sunset Restaurant
One hundred-fifty year old eatery with perhaps the best view of the sunset in Malibu.
Of course, there are groceries, and bakeries and specialty food shops for when you eat home. However, Malibu also has outstanding shopping too. Examples include:
Shopping
Encore – Women’s day and evening wear.
Malibu Lifestyles Man – Men’s sportswear
Samantha – Lingerie specialties
Pepi – Jewelry
