If there is one thing that children love, it’s animals. Whether they are checking out exotic breeds at the zoo or exclaiming over dogs at the neighborhood park, children exemplify the instinctual connection between animals and mankind. Nevertheless, many kids need to be taught how to use soft touches and calm voices with nature’s creatures. The Pasadena Humane Society and Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) not only believes in fostering these loving relationships, but also offers a unique opportunity for children to bond with dogs with their program titled Barks and Books.
Learn More About Barks and Books
Through a partnership with local libraries, Barks and Books pairs children with a different kind of reading partner: a trusty dog trained through the Companion Animal Program. The two will spend time sharing an animal-related story. These books teach children that humans and animals have many emotions in common, as well as similar basic needs, such as food, water, shelter and tender love and care. This reading opportunity provides a chance for students to gain confidence in reading out loud, while also encouraging respectful interactions with others.
Geared toward children ages five to twelve, Barks and Books will take place twice in the month of May. Check out the Hill Avenue Branch Library on Tuesday, May 23rd, at 3:30 PM, or Lamanda Park Branch Library on Thursday, May 25th, at the same time. Whether you choose the location closest to you, or decide to attend both events, your family will be in for a real treat. Even better, it’s free!
Barks and Books will take place at the Hill Avenue Branch Library, which can be found at 55 South Hill Avenue, Pasadena, California 91106, and at the Lamanda Park Branch Library, which is located at 140 South Altadena Drive, Pasadena, California 91107.
